“Colibris” is an expression of awe and gratitude for hummingbirds and the flowers they polinate. I made the sketch for this painting while planning a birding trip to Oaxaca, Mexico in 2024. The planning had me filled with excitement for all the new species of these flying jewels that I would see there, from Lesser Violetear and Cinnamon Hummingbird, to the rare endemic Blue-capped Hummingbird. The color palette was meant to evoke the feeling of the arid Central Valley of Oaxaca, the birthplace of maize.
